The Moon and Gravity

Sabrina gets a new set in this episode of Crash Course Kids.

Do you want to be an astronaut?

Would you like to someday walk on the moon?

Well, you better learn a little about gravity so you can escape from Earth and head into space. Today, Sabrina chats with us about what it takes to get to the moon!

The Moon’s Orbit and Satellites

So, why doesn’t the moon just crash into the Earth?

And why doesn’t the Earth crash into the Sun?

What are orbits exactly and why do they happen?

Well, it has to do with gravity and velocity.

In this episode of Crash Course Kids, Sabrina talks to us about how these things work and why we don’t need to worry about the moon colliding with us.

Weird Orbits, Galaxies, Black Holes,

Last week we talked about the orbits of the Earth and our Moon.

But today we’re going to go a little bigger… well, a lot better.

Did you know that there is a massive Black Hole at the center of our Galaxy?

Or that Pluto’s orbit is really… weird?

Today, Sabrina talks about these things and more on Crash Course Kids.

Comment Help

Remember, your comments are reflective comments just like your smiley face comments at school. You can share what you’ve learnt, what you enjoyed and ask any questions you may have. Also, don’t forget to write full sentences with the correct punctuation!

A bad example: ‘I’ve learnt loads, that was great’

A good example: ‘I’ve learnt that the Sun is in the centre of our solar system and that it is really big’

Never Use a Full Name

Use other names, but nothing silly as this name appears for everyone to see. Names that are full names or sill names will not be posted. Use abbreviations like   Mr G or Miss P or your initials will do.

  1. I have learnt quite a lot : I have learnt about escape velocity and how important it is for space exploration ; and the 2 things which makes gravity how strong/weak it is[it is distance from objects and the mass of objects].
I realised the video 2 says the moons orbit is 27 days long, but it should be 29.5 days long . One of the reasons for the moon not crashing into Earth is because of the Sun’s solar winds . The balance is important too but scientists have a theory that the Moon’s velocity and speed will increase so much it will no longer orbit Earth . This is because any rotating object which orbits a planet will increase speed because when it rotates the gravity pulls making rotation faster.
In video 3 it says “light cannot escape so we cannot see it” but all forms of dark matter have the same qualities and I agree but photographs have caught black holes{images with light}.It also said ” sucks things up ” but actually its event horizon squeezes every thing until we cannot see it. Pluto acts like a comet due to its distance and surface temperature and easily can be pulled out of our solar system.

    1. Excellent reflective comment. The Moon orbit is 27 days. It appears to move completely around in about 27.3 days as observed from the Earth. The moon also takes 29.5 days to complete its Lunar phases (New (also called the Dark Moon) – not visible, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, etc)
